About IPSS

IPSS was established to serve the distressed families of fishermen affected by alcoholism and drug abuse by extending a warm helping hand to overcome their difficulties. IPSS was registered in 1986 and started the work at Vettuthura, Channankara P.O Thiruvanathapuram in the year 1987 by opening Holy Spirit Hospital, the first de-addiction centre in the southern region of Kerala. Rev.Dr.Jose Puthenveed’s vision of bringing solace to the victims and families of alcoholics was actualized through the dedicated services of the co-founder member late Sr. Dr Mary Anne and many like-minded friends. IPSS currently focuses on psychosocial services such as psychosocial awareness programs, counseling training, treatment, publications, community development and research activities. IPSS is committed to the sublime task of empowering social workers, psychologists, counseling psychologists, school counselors, educators, teachers, parents, and mental health care professionals and the communities in their psychosocial and spiritual development.

Practicum is conducted in hospitals, clinics, therapy rooms. Field visits to special schools, psychiatric wards are part of the practical learning experience. Supervised counseling can be availed of by each student.


  1. U.GC. approved MSc. Degrees (Regular) The most essential component in the Master's Program is professional counseling training. This chance is exclusively restricted to MLCU students.
  2. Skill development has priority with 50% marks awarded in each subject.
  3. Web based interactive learning outside classroom (Edmodo) application
  4. Field visits to centres such as - Mental Health Hospital, Differently-abled Children's Special School, Aids Rehab, Palliative Care Centre, School Counseling Centres, Social Work Organizations, Family Counseling Centres, with classes from their professionals.

Martin Luther Christian University was created by Act No. 11 of 2005 of the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya and received the assent of the Governor on July 6, 2005. The Government of Meghalaya issued the gazette notification on February 22, 2006. The creation of the University is in accordance with the University' Grants Commission Act, 1956 under Section 2(1) and the University is empowered to grant degrees under Section 22 of the UGC Act. MLCU is also permitted to give affiliation to colleges outside Meghalaya State (MLCU vs UGC 2012 Guwahati High Court (Division Bench)). Enlisted in UGC Website:Public notice on Private Universities). Several students and graduates of MLCU have been awarded JRF,NET and merit scholarships by the UGC.
